    I chuck the tungsten up in a drill, then hit it with a scotchbrite pad to remove discoloring or the colored band on the end. Then I like to take it straight to the belt sander and blast full speed on the drill, slow to half trigger at the end, and remove the tungsten from the belt with the drill still spinning. Dial your taper for whatever situation to your preference.

    I modified a common woodworking router bit with a much wider roller bearing to trim surfaces exactly like the shelf on this project. A bottom bearing flush trim bit. Made a delrin sleeve the same od as the bottom bearing bit 1/2” bit, machined to take the bearing from the same bit in 1/4” diameter. For me, it works really well. Just keep an eye on the end of the delrin as you travel and don’t lever it up off the guide surface. Hardly have to file, with just a little practice..

    When cleaning to degrease or get whatever out of the metal, would using a ultrasonic cleaner with acetone do a good job (after hand cleaning)? Just wondering.

    • @KANEKIDWELDS
      @KANEKIDWELDS 5 місяців тому

      That works well for surface cleaning, likely nothing better! These have the oil/contamination embedded and locked inside of the grain structure from the quench-hardening process. Best I know for this is to warm the grain until it releases oils, then follow with the ultrasonic. Acetone lifts oils away & soapy hot water removes what the acetone won’t dilute. I also like to isopropyl rinse parts after water wash for the best clean I can get.

    Wouldn’t it be easier to place it into a furnace and get it to a bright orange and then press it flat?

    • @dwaynesykes694
      @dwaynesykes694 5 місяців тому

      Just as likely to warp again as it cools down. If you fixture it in place, it'll probably just spring back as soon as it's unclamped. That said, I'm curious if there are any special properties lost by heating it, either by welding or annealing in a furnace.

    • @dwaynesykes694
      @dwaynesykes694 5 місяців тому

      @@RadDadisRad ask any knifemaker how well flattening an orange hot piece of metal in a press goes. The rapid cooling from the press, which acts like a giant heatsink, actually creates rather tremendous stresses. It'll spring back into a banana shape the second you take it out of the press. Flattening/straightening is done pretty much the same way as here, with targeted application of heat and a solid understanding of how the metal will move as a result of that application of heat. Alternatively, if you have enough material present, you can anneal/stress relieve the piece in a heat treat oven with slow, controlled cooling, it'll move how it wants based on existing internal stress that's relieve during heat treat, then machine it into the desired finished shape. It'll move again a bit if subsequently heat treated, but it should be minimal given a well-controlled process. Final dimensions can be achieved by grinding after heat treat.

    Hey, for those of us who are clueless about golf, what is the purpose of this modification?

    • @KANEKIDWELDS
      @KANEKIDWELDS 5 місяців тому

      This is custom made for personal style & the specific modifications are for user playability. How it’s been styled, is so it looks like this. How is built, is to match specific body mechanics to better control the flow of the putter throughout the arc of the swing. This is set with a long neck, that balances the face of the putter and redirects the arced swing path to be more linear (straight back and straight forward with less arc). Also, with the extended neck, it allows for a closer foot to ball position, that lets the eyes look down more directly over the ball to see the rolling line of the intended putt. This is also built with more loft than standard, to accommodate for forward shaft lean, producing a true dynamic angle of attack on the ball.

      @@KANEKIDWELDS Wow. It's mind boggling to have a glimpse of how much thoughts and considerations go into such a thing. The question is then why don't they do it this way to being with? I think I remember seeing you on Instagram cutting the original putter and adding this 2-3 inches long extension. So why not manufacture it this way to being with? Or are you "tailoring" it to the physical build of a one specific player?

    • @KANEKIDWELDS
      @KANEKIDWELDS 5 місяців тому

      @@danl.4743 cutting this from a much larger block of metal would be the step for a one piece milled construction. This style doesn’t match the movements of the majority of players, so it would be a very expensive and smaller market to manufacture for. It definitely is done in one piece for elite players that have proven engineering specs for their setup, or private customers paying for it. A lot of pro golfers putters are cut and rebuilt to their specs just like this one is, & sometimes look like a monster that works out perfectly for them. Kinda like shoes, it’s best when you find comfort and a great fit, all with a style that gives a boost of self-confidence.
